Other Computing Green Ideas – Energy Use and Your Digital Devices:

Your home computer infrastructure uses significant amount of energy but with proper management of all of your electronic devices some studies indicate that you can save up to $80 per year on your electricity bill and help the environment by employing a few simple routines in your home. 

According to “Climate Savers Computing” with your help, we can reduce global CO2 emissions from the operation of computers by 54 million tonnes a year by 2010. That’s like taking 11 million cars off the road each year.

This may seem obvious but, generally speaking, leaving digital devices on around the clock, increases your energy bill.  In addition, more dust is drawn into the machine which can cause unnecessary heat build up that will make the fans run more causing additional power consumption.  The industry standard ENERGY STAR® is great however, an ENERGY STAR® label is not a guarantee that your machine is saving energy. Always make sure that the ENERGY STAR® features are enabled.

Since mid 1999, ENERGY STAR® specifications require all computers with network capability to sleep on networks and to respond to computer requests to reactivate.  Individually, the energy saved by using these settings may be small, but when you consider the number of computers that are now used at work and home, the total effect can be enormous.
