Protect the Environment - Protect Yourself
The disposal of electronic waste is a serious and growing problem. A study commissioned by Environment Canada estimated that 81,000 tonnes of IT and telecom equipment were recycled and disposed of in 2002. Computers and monitors accounted for 70% of this total. The study projected that recycling and disposal of IT waste would increase to 91,000 tonnes in 2010.
Is Your Data Really Gone?
Have you really erased all your data permanently and effectively? Simply deleting files does not do this! In fact in a recent study sponsored by British Telecom and Sims Lifecycle Services (the world’s largest electrical and electronics recovery & recycling company) and carried out by the forensic computer science laboratories at University of Glamorgan in Wales, Edith Cowan University in Australia and Longwood University in the US, astoundingly showed that 34% of discarded hard drives still contained confidential data. And worse, some of that data could have threatened national security had it fallen into the wrong hands.
For example, a disk bought on eBay revealed details of test launch procedures for the THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Air Defence) ground to air missile defence system. Two disks from the UK appear to have hospital information including patient medical records, x-ray images as well as sensitive and confidential staff letters. In another from Australia one hard drive was found to be from a nursing home that contained confidential patient information including pictures of actual patients and photos of their wounds. The study goes on to highlight other examples from US banks, public and private corporations, even the Federal Reserve Board all containing a mix of business and personal correspondence that could be embarrassing at the very least and a serious breach of security at worst.
